Environmental Statement
Hans-Joachim Wowerat GmbH is a mid-sized family-owned company based in Solingen. For 60 years, now in its third generation, we have been distributing hosiery of all kinds and related products (e.g., underwear, gloves, accessories) with great passion, offering our customers a diverse and market-oriented assortment.
The company management is aware of its responsibility, especially in times of emerging climate change. Thus, developing our company in an environmentally and resource-conserving manner is always included in corporate decision-making. We always aim to avoid, or if unavoidable, minimize the impact on our environment. For this, we also strive to raise awareness among our employees, partners, and customers.
We commit to always implementing the environmental standards of our location and not to pursue company growth at the expense of environmental risk. Our environmental officer, Mrs. Leonie Wowerat, is particularly committed to this cause.
Waste
Waste prevention is our top priority. Where waste cannot be avoided, we strive to achieve the highest possible recycling capability through precise separation. Our cardboard and writing paper is FSC certified and is reused as much as possible. Afterwards, we collect it separately from the rest of the waste and have it recycled regionally by Eugen Scalabrin Recycling GmbH in Solingen. For our household waste, a bio bin is available. We dispose of green waste and garden debris at the municipal composting facility. The use of recycled paper for toilet and towels is, of course, a given.
We try to avoid product waste. For example, by selling as special items. We donate surplus stock.
For the future, we aim to redesign our range to be as plastic-free as possible. We have already changed the first sock presentations.
Energy
We strive to work as energy-efficiently as possible. This also includes instructing our employees, for example, to turn off the lights during breaks and switch off electronic devices when not needed, and to air out the office rooms in an energy-efficient manner. We strive to move away from fossil fuels and source at least 45% of our energy mix from renewable sources. In addition, solar panels have been installed on our warehouse roof.
In the medium term, we also plan to equip the second warehouse roof with solar panels.
Emissions
We strive to award service contracts as regionally as possible to ensure the shortest possible travel distances for our partners. For the highly energy-intensive parcel shipping, we rely on emission-free transport (or emission compensation).
